“I met Amina Khatton at the Boyd Street Community Garden, across Franklin Street from Whole Foods Portland, Maine. I had already begun a large oil painting a few weeks earlier featuring her plot. Amina had edged her piece of soil with sticks and wire. Chives, lettuce, tomatoes, herbs, onions and beans all grew happily under her care. Amina showed me her garden and gave me and Photographer Adam Birt, permission to capture her on film. I let her know that the title of my painting for the August hanging at Whole Foods was, “Amina’s Garden.”

The “Across the Street Urban Art/Food Initiative” Sponsored by Whole Foods Portland and The Root Cellar Maine, seeks to dialogue with Maine’s refugee community using art and food education. Artist, Erin McGee Ferrell is the author of this project.
