“Three Holiday Still life Mixed Media paintings were created over December 2016. My Youth and Adult Art Students each created a work based on a full and colorful array of objects in my Maine Art Studio. The three works here are the ones I crafted while teaching. Techniques introduced for this exercise were Wet on Wet Watercolor Painting using liquid frisket, as well as torn paper collage and contour drawing. Students studied Nativity Paintings by Hans Memling and Fra Angelico.”

Painting for Haiti. Art Education and Materials. Maine to Haiti 2016. Erin McGee Ferrell, American Artist, with a team of Maine, Pennsylvania, and Ohio educators to Institution Univers Chre’tien d’Haiti. Ouanaminthe, Haiti.

Institution Univers educates over 2,300 students, pre-school through grade 13. Ranked as a top-ten school in Haiti, the program provides educational, spiritual, and vocational support for all of its students. IU graduates more than 50 students each year.

The school was started in 1994 in the border town of Ouanaminthe by the current director Hugues Bastien, a native of Haiti. Since then, Institution Univers has grown from a one-room preschool into a campus of multiple buildings employing over 150 local professionals and support personnel.

Pre-school and Kindergarten of Institution Univers. The Pre-school and Kindergarten program of Institution Univers serves over 600 children ages 3-5 years old, with four classrooms at each grade level. Children learn to read, write, and recite basic French.

Primary and Secondary School of Institution Univers

The Primary and Secondary school of Institution Univers educates students in grade levels 1st-13th. All grades adhere strictly to the curriculum standards mandated by the Haitian educational guidelines and are supplemented with biblical coursework. College Univers serves nearly 900 students in the primary grades (1st through 6th) and 800 in the secondary (7th through 13th).

“I was privileged to travel with my daughter and other parishioners from The Episcopal Church Of Saint Mary -Falmouth, as well as teams from Bar Harbor Maine, Cleveland Ohio, and Pennsylvania to Institution Univers. The main objectives of the trip were teaching Toefl test prep exercises for students to study in an American University, Painting Classrooms, and an Art Component.

The Art objective was to 1. evaluate the current Murals need for repair and site plan future mural possibilities, 2. dialogue with two artists in the community who previously graduated from the school to access their abilities for teaching art education in a k-13 classroom and to provide basic lesson plans and objectives for future courses 3. reorganize an art space in the school 4. Art Club.

The members of the team and I worked together to meet these objectives and set in motion an organized art space, fully stocked with art supplies and Haitian Art Books. An Art instructor and a high school assistant are in place to lead an “Art Club” for a trial period through the end of the school year.

Along with the education and experiences with in the school walls, there were many fabulous discussions had outside within the community. I interviewed many artists and Art brokers and learned a lot about how art is produced and sold in Haiti, how supplies are bought, and artist training.

I am very grateful and appreciative to the member of The Episcopal Church Of St Mary, Falmouth, Maine who initiated this trip and supported this endeavor both financially and spiritually.”
